I fell asleep the other day thinking about bugs. They’re so gross. I’d been scrolling - trying to get my mind off things - and had seen a close-up picture of a wolf spider’s face that struck such an immediate feeling of primal revulsion in me that I had to turn off my phone and consider the spiritual implications. Eight eyes are six eyes too many. Eight limbs are at least twice as many as any living thing should ever hope for. Why are the fangs furry? I know it’s not “fur,” but it looks like it close up. It’s dissonant. It can’t hide the grotesque, only heighten it. Oh my word. I just looked it up again. To remember. Immediate jolt of adrenaline. Instant fear and nausea. Horror of horrors. Felt like scraping off my skin and running into the desert, only that’s where the tarantulas live. I’m not like this normally I promise. Just Google it (wolf spider face close up) and see what I mean.
